Since the creation of woman, at least 50% of the world's population needs lingerie. Thus, the history of lingerie is full of interesting facts about the evolution of the lingerie of today. Some of the information is from trivia fit for a category on Jeopardy; other facts are downright scary; and, a few are simply stupid. Nevertheless, most women seem to have survived the inventions, by men, to answer feminine needs. Unfortunately, men also recount the myriad of changes from a male perspective. Therefore, as women have constantly struggled to hide, holdup, or display their female attributes, consider lingerie from a female point of view. In the beginning, women have been expected to hide the nature curves of the female human body. The reasons: because flat is the fashion, and men should not be wrongly inflamed by a loose woman. Whoa! Women have had to suffer discomfort and physical harm, because of men and fashion? Not always. In China's history of lingerie, female children are often taken into slavery for the sex trade. Because fathers cannot afford to pay the oppressive taxes of the feudal lords, parents sold the girls, or the lords came and forcibly take their due. To avoid recognition as a female, some girls refuse to wear the appropriate undergarments. Instead, girls choose to severely bind themselves, so the feudal lords think they are young boys. Eventually, since English women are not binding their figures to escape slavery, doctors speak out, revealing the physical harm of corsets and binding. Compressed so tightly, women have trouble breathing and frequently faint. In some cases, the corsets actually force the skeleton to press on, and damage, vital internal organs, even to the point of death. As a result, lingerie eventually becomes supportive devices, defying the negative effects of gravity. However, the new purpose and style actually went a little overboard. The new lingerie almost pushes the breast up and over the neckline of women's attire. While men may appreciate the new look, and women enjoy the allure in intimate liaisons, the style is uncomfortable and impractical for day-to-day living. Once again, reason introduces a more practical approach to women's undergarments. Nevertheless, in the 1950's, the desire for sexy lingerie, to display women's finer physical attributes, keeps designers and manufacturers busy. After World War II, the ratio of men to women is skewed. While men have their pick, young woman want a way to attract her man and keep him interested. So, the lingerie manufacturers are back in business. Not only are the manufacturers back in business, many women have decided to put their female attributes on display. Finally, ladies figure out, women can be sexy and sensual, and still be the CEO of a major company, a stay-at-home mother, or anything in between. Now, lingerie is much more than bra, panties, and nightgowns. Today, in addition to the traditional wear, lingerie includes bustiers, teddies, babydoll gowns, garters, etc. Women can dress for a night on the town, or an intimate evening for two. Instead of hiding the feminine figure, ladies can enjoy being a girl; have appropriate support for sports activities, or simple compliment the perfect outfit with lingerie accentuating womanly curves. In summary, the background of lingerie is riddled with starts, stops, backward steps, and forward thinking trendy styles. It's that time of year again, the so called most romantic day of the year, when girls' expectations for underwear are at an all time high! Rule one - Find out her bra size!

OK, guys, this may sound like a simple start, but it's amazing how many of us don't actually know the size of our partner's bra size, one in five men I surveyed! This one's not worth taking a chance on, so take a sneaky look in her underwear draw or ask her friend - but remember be discrete.

Rule two - The big pant debate

Shorts, briefs or thongs? Remember you are looking to impress her, not offend her, or worse still scare her off. There is a balance between what men want our partners to wear and what she likes to wear, (my survey showed the full suspenders, bra and pants is the preference, or even nothing at all!) so take notice of what underwear you have seen her in. If you are looking to spice things up a little then try something daring in seductive colours like black with a splash of pink or yellow, as opposed to porn star red! Our poll showed an overwhelming 56% of women would prefer to get black underwear for Valentine's Day, whilst only 8% prefer white, however red was popular at 20%.

Rule four - Shop online
